What “convert” really means
ERC-20, TRC-20 and BEP-20 are the token standards of Ethereum, TRON and BNB Smart Chain. The same stablecoin on two of them is two balances held by two separate contracts on two separate networks, and neither network can see the other (how the labels differ). There is no setting that turns one into the other. Whatever the button says, the value leaves one network and arrives on another — which is a bridge transfer or an exchange round trip, with a cost attached.
In Trust Wallet: a cross-chain swap
Trust Wallet’s swap works from two fields: what you pay and what you get. You choose both, enter the amount, preview the swap, review the details and confirm (Trust Wallet). When what you pay is on one network and what you get is on another, that swap is the move between networks.
What Trust Wallet’s guide does not say is which service carries the transfer or what it charges for doing so. We could not confirm either from a page we could open, so the preview screen is the place to read both: the amount you will receive after every fee, before you confirm. On Binance: a deposit and a withdrawal
An exchange does the same job in two steps. First the deposit: Binance asks you to choose the deposit network so that it is the same as the network of the platform you are sending from, warns that the wrong network can mean the funds are lost, and says plainly not to pick a network for its low fee but for its compatibility (Binance). Then the withdrawal, on the network you want the funds to end up on, chosen to match the receiving side (Binance). Two network choices, each able to lose the money if it is wrong; between them, the funds sit with the exchange.
What ETH BEP-20 actually is
“ETH BEP-20” is not ether. It is a token contract on BNB Smart Chain, and you can ask that contract directly through a
public node what it is: the contract at 0x2170Ed0880ac9A755fd29B2688956BD959F933F8 answers with the name Ethereum
Token, the symbol ETH and eighteen decimal places. Holding it means holding a token on BNB Smart Chain. Turning it into
