Compatible is not connected

BNB Smart Chain is EVM-compatible and supports Ethereum’s tooling (BNB Chain documentation), and its BEP-20 tokens follow essentially the specification ERC-20 defines for Ethereum (Ethereum.org). That similarity is why the two get described as versions of one token. They are not: each chain keeps its own contract and its own balance, and moving between them is a transfer someone has to be paid for.

The identical address format is the risk

One address string can be valid on Ethereum, BNB Smart Chain and every other EVM network at once. What decides where the money arrives is the network selected when sending — on an exchange withdrawal screen, that is a dropdown most people click past. There is no way to read the network off the address afterwards.

Fees at each end

Sending costs ETH on Ethereum; using the funds afterwards costs BNB on BNB Smart Chain. The table separates the provider’s fee from gas on the source network for exactly this reason: a low fee paid during an expensive hour on Ethereum is not a cheap transfer.

You transfer rather than convert. Both standards describe how a token behaves; the balances sit on two different blockchains. A bridge or an exchange withdrawal moves value across, and both are above.

The address looks the same on both networks — does that help?

No, and it is the main hazard here. BNB Smart Chain uses the same hex address format as Ethereum, so the address never tells you which network a transfer travelled over. The sender's network choice decides where the funds land.

What do I need on BNB Smart Chain afterwards?

BNB. Transaction fees there are paid in it, so a stablecoin arriving on its own cannot be moved again until some BNB does.
